Origin of the name Essertfallon

The etymology of the name has not yet been explained, and its first written mention is not known.

Founding of Essertfallon

Neither the founder nor the date of origin of Essertfallon is known. The hamlet only appears from the late 18th century. It belonged to the former municipality of Epiquerez, in the Clos du Doubs, and now lies in the municipality of Clos du Doubs.[1]

History of Essertfallon

1794. On 27 June an epizootic of gangrenous pleuropneumonia strikes the cattle of Essertfallon.[2]

1866. On 10 November the assembly of the two sections meets to decide on a contribution to the hospital at Saignelégier.[2]

1925. On 18 January the assembly of mayors of the Clos du Doubs calls for a postal bus for Saint-Ursanne, Montenol, Epauvillers, Essertfallon and Soubey.[2]

1939. The post office of Essertfallon closes.[2]

1941. The Marie Berret Foundation makes a donation for Montbion and Essertfallon.[2]

1944. In March an aircraft drops bombs on the area of Epiquerez, Epauvillers, Essertfallon and Soubey. An unexploded 500 kg English bomb is found near the village.[2][3]

1965. On 26 February the municipal assembly of Epiquerez votes a credit of 55'000 francs for the Epiquerez-Essertfallon road.[3]

2000. 300 metres of protective hedges are planted.[2]

2009. On 1 January Epiquerez merges with six other municipalities into the new municipality of Clos du Doubs.[1][3]

2015. On 30 July a straw house, a project begun in 2002, is inaugurated.[2]
