Le Pâquier-Montbarry

Canton of Fribourg · District: Gruyère · Village in the municipality of Le Pâquier
Part of the municipality of Le Pâquier

Origin of the name Le Pâquier-Montbarry

The locality joins two names: that of Le Pâquier, recorded in 1637 as « Pasquier », and that of Montbarry, the site of its baths.[1][3]

Founding of Le Pâquier-Montbarry

Le Pâquier-Montbarry lies halfway between Bulle and Gruyères, at the foot of the north side of the Moléson. The locality's second name is that of the Montbarry baths, in use from the late 18th century. Around 1890 a Grand Hôtel des Bains stood here, promoted by V. Tissot, and the Kurhaus is mentioned in 1892. The station on the Bulle-Montbovon line opened in 1903. In 1928 the Sisters of the Retraite chrétienne bought the baths. A community of Carmelite nuns from Narbonne, first settled at Lully, moved to the upper part of the municipality in 1936.[1][2][3][5]
