Villariaz
Origin of the name Villariaz
The place is recorded in 1148 as « Vilar Roart ». The present name, Villariaz, has not been explained.[1]
Founding of Villariaz
Villariaz lies at the western foot of the Gibloux. Its written history begins with the gift of 1148 to the abbey of Hauterive. The lordship then belonged to noble families from Vaud and Burgundy, and later to Fribourg patricians: the Norma, Vuisternens, de Palézieux, Nicod, de Fallerand, de Praroman, Empsis, de Challant, Ratzé, König, de Gottrau and Reynaud were in turn lords or co-lords. The village has always belonged to the parish of Vuisternens-devant-Romont. Once given over to livestock and fodder crops, it has become a residential village. Villariaz is now part of the municipality of Vuisternens-devant-Romont (merger of 2003).[1]
