Origin of the name Vully-le-Bas

The name Vully appears in 968 as « Williacense ». In 1443 the form « Ripperia » is found, and before 1831 the municipality is known as the « commune générale des quatre villages de La Rivière ». In 1977 Vully-le-Bas becomes Bas-Vully. German speakers once called it « Unterwistenlach ».[1][2]

Founding of Vully-le-Bas

Vully-le-Bas lay at the foot of Mont Vully, with the villages of Praz, Nant and Sugiez, and that of Chaumont, now deserted. Under the Ancien Régime each village had its own administration, while the burghers and four governors jointly managed the common funds of La Rivière. The villages belonged to the parish of Môtier. Quality vineyards go back to Roman times, and the municipality also lived from market gardening and fishing. Since 1 January 2016 it has formed the municipality of Mont-Vully together with Haut-Vully.[1]
