Origin of the name Allaman

A family of ministeriales of Allaman is attested in 1219; the place is mentioned in 1234 in the form « Alamant ». The name is thought to correspond to the adjective « alaman(d) » and to designate a place inhabited by a certain A(l)lamandus, Alamannus or Alamant, or by a German-speaking (Alemannic) individual (to be cross-checked).

Founding of Allaman

The area was occupied early: Neolithic graves, Bronze Age stone cists and Roman coins and building remains have been found there. None of the sources consulted says who founded the village. In the Middle Ages a lordship developed whose castle controlled the crossing of the Aubonne; it covered an area twice as large as the present municipality and included Buchillon.
