Ayent
Origin of the name Ayent
The name appears in 1052 as « Agent », then « Argenta » in 1250. Its origin is uncertain: it may derive from the Latin personal name Agens and refer to the estate of a certain Agens. There is no village called Ayent. The name refers to all the hamlets of the municipality together.
Founding of Ayent
Ayent was settled very early: on the right bank of the Rhône, graves from the Late Neolithic, the Early Bronze Age, the La Tène period and the Early Middle Ages have been found. A lordship and a castle are recorded in 1052, but the very complex feudal history of the place remains little known. The Benedictine priory of Saint-Romain, dependent on the abbey of Ainay in Lyon, is the first known Benedictine foundation in Valais. Since the Middle Ages the community has comprised the three « thirds » of Luc, Botyre and Arbaz. The present municipality has ten hamlets: Botyre, Luc, Saxonne, La Place, Blignou, Fortunau, Saint-Romain, Signèse, Villa and Argnou, joined by the Anzère resort.
