Origin of the name Beuson

Called « Bosone » in the 13th century, then « Bouson », the village owes its name to the Bosone family of the neighbouring hamlet of Le Vernay.[2]

Founding of Beuson

Beuson is a village of the municipality of Nendaz. Upstream lay Le Vernay, a hamlet that has since vanished, home of the family that gave the village its name. In the Middle Ages Beuson belonged to the majorie of Brignon, and the Chapter of Sion owned lands and vineyards nearby. Later the water power of the Printse drove a flour mill, a sawmill and a tannery, which made the village the industrial centre of the municipality.[1][2][3][6]

History of Beuson

12th century. The lords of Sierre hold rights over the men of Le Vernay, the hamlet next to Beuson.[2]

1212-1214. Anselme de Conthey and Albert de Vétroz cede to the Chapter of Sion their rights over « les hommes du Vernay en terre de Nendaz ». This hamlet upstream of Beuson has since disappeared.[2]

13th century. The village appears as « Bosone ». Vineyards are then well developed around Baar, Brignon and Beuson, where the Chapter of Sion holds most of its lands.[2]

Around 1250. The majorie to which Beuson belongs also includes Baar, Brignon, Heiss and Clèbes.[2]

1337. The men of Le Vernay acknowledge themselves liegemen and taillables of the Chapter of Sion, saving the fealty owed to the Count of Savoy.[2]

1435. Date given for the bisse (irrigation channel) of Salins, one of the oldest in the region.[3]

18th-19th century. Beuson has as many inhabitants as Basse-Nendaz. A flour mill, a sawmill and a tannery run on the power of the Printse.[3]

1931. By then the vineyards of Beuson have entirely disappeared.[2]

Until the mid-20th century. Nendaz grows a great deal of cereal, and Beuson, on the Printse, remains the economic centre of the municipality. The river drives mills, fulling mills, presses and sawmills here.[6]
