Origin of the name Biel (VS)

The form « Buele » is recorded in 1277. The etymology of the name remains unexplained.[1][2]

Founding of Biel (VS)

Biel, in the Goms valley, is the historic centre of the Grafschaft (« county »). From 1344 this name covers the territory of Biel, Ritzingen, Selkingen and Gluringen, from the Walibach near Selkingen to the Reckingerbach. After 1224 the counts of Mörel held the village as an episcopal fief. The county's name may come from them. In 1237 Boso de Granges, bishop of Sion and last descendant of the counts of Granges (or of Gradetsch), brought the territory into the bishop's possessions by a donation. Marquard, knight of Mörel, declared the people of Biel free allodial holders. Until 1799 the county had its own free court, with high justice, and belonged to the upper dizain of Goms.[1][2][3]
