Gluringen
Origin of the name Gluringen
First recorded in 1203 as « Gluringen ». The etymology remains unexplained.[1]
Founding of Gluringen
Gluringen is a loosely built village on the gently rising northern flank of the Rhône valley, in the Goms valley. The settlement probably grew from an isolated Alemannic farmstead. The village belonged to the Grafschaft quarter of the tithing (dizain) of Goms, which formed a free jurisdiction within Goms. The municipality received statutes, and representatives (« Gewalthaber ») are mentioned. First part of the parish of Münster, then of Biel, Gluringen acquired a chapel, a presbytery and then its church, before becoming a rectorate and a parish. Farming and alpine pasture dominated until the second half of the 20th century. The village was linked to the cantonal road in the mid-19th century. Tourism (holiday camps, 400 beds) now completes the economy. From 2004 to 2016 Gluringen formed with Reckingen the municipality of Reckingen-Gluringen, which then joined the municipality of Goms.[1][2][3]
