Origin of the name Bretigny

Name origin: the sources consulted give neither a dated early form specific to the hamlet nor an etymology; the origin of the name is not explained there. The name forms part of that of the municipality, called « Saint-Barthélemy-Bretigny » from 1803, then « Brétigny-Saint-Barthélemy » until 1870 according to one source (to be cross-checked). Not to be confused with the municipality of Bretigny-sur-Morrens.

Founding of Bretigny

Bretigny is not a municipality: it is a hamlet of the municipality of Saint-Barthélemy, in the Gros-de-Vaud district, on the south (or east) bank of the Talent, facing the village of Saint-Barthélemy and its castle. No founding act is known and the sources consulted do not say who created it. The archives cited by the municipality record two village groups from the 11th century, Bretigny east of the Talent and Saint-Barthélemy to the west (to be cross-checked). The village was long divided into two parts: one near the castle, with a Reformed majority, and Bretigny, Catholic. In the Vaud dialect, the inhabitants of Bretigny bear the nickname « Suce-Miel ».

History of Bretigny

1801. Construction of a separate Catholic church, the old Saint-Barthélemy church having until then served both confessions; according to one source it stands in Bretigny (to be cross-checked).

1803. The municipality bears the name Saint-Barthélemy-Bretigny.

1863. The Catholic church is rebuilt or remodelled, some sixty years after its construction.

1870. The official name of the municipality, « Brétigny-Saint-Barthélemy », is shortened to « Saint-Barthélemy » (to be cross-checked).

1953. Bretigny and Saint-Barthélemy are united and form the municipality of Saint-Barthélemy as it is known today, according to the municipal website (to be cross-checked, as the municipality already bore both names in the 19th century).
