Origin of the name Champoussin

Lying at 1'588 m above sea level, Champoussin bears a name whose origin has not been cleared up.[4]

Founding of Champoussin

Champoussin is one of the two resorts of the municipality of Val-d'Illiez, together with Les Crosets. It grew out of a planning project: its district plan, approved by the cantonal Council of State, is presented as the last link of the ski connection of the Franco-Swiss Portes du Soleil area. New lifts then connect its ski area with those of the other Franco-Swiss resorts. Postbuses link it to the centre of the municipality.[1][2][3][4]

History of Champoussin

1180. Val-d'Illiez, the municipality of Champoussin, appears as "apud Yliacum".[1]

1331. The Bishop of Sion gives the parish of Val-d'Illiez to the abbey of Abondance in exchange for Géronde. The abbey installs a prior and a vicar or chaplain there.[1]

1865. A carriage road reaches Val-d'Illiez. The Monthey-Morgins railway follows in 1908.[1]

1953. An earthquake brings a hot spring to the surface in the municipality. The spa has been expanding rapidly since 1983.[1]

1959. A ski tow is installed at Les Crosets, the municipality's other resort.[1]

1973. The Council of State approves the district plan of Champoussin.[2]

1976. Birth of the resort, with the first installations towards the Pointe de l'Au (1980s according to another source).[3][5]

1977. Two chairlifts reach the Pointe de l'Au and link Champoussin with Les Crosets. The Derrière Pertuis ski tow links it with Morgins.[5]

1997. A chapel is built in Champoussin.[1]

2011. The resort has 1'571 beds, against 3'095 at Les Crosets.[1]
