Origin of the name Cusy et Villars

Cusy appears in the forms « Cusye » in 1250, « Cusier » in 1411 and « Cussiacum » in 1443. No dated old form is known for Villars. Neither name has been explained.[2]

Founding of Cusy et Villars

Around 1100 Hermance was only a simple castrum protecting a few fishermen's huts. Two parishes then arose not far from each other: Cusy and Villars. Villars lay about 1 km from the borough of Hermance, on the road to Chevrens, and its territory included that of Hermance. The place is now part of the municipality of Hermance. Cusy appears in the Middle Ages on the right bank of the Hermance, about 1 km north-east of the borough. A former parish and municipality of Haute-Savoie, it is today in France. In 1247 Aymon II of Faucigny founded the borough of Hermance: the parish of Villars declined, and Cusy shifted its activity towards the present village of Chens.[1][2][3]
