Origin of the name Cutterwil

The village appears in 1361 in the form « Curtivri ». In French it was formerly called Cudrevy. The origin of the name remains unexplained.[1]

Founding of Cutterwil

Cutterwil, a French-speaking village, has always belonged to the parish of Belfaux. Properties and rights here were held by the Villars, Vuippens, Praroman, Wild and Diesbach families, by the Confraternity of the Holy Spirit, by the great hospital of Fribourg and by the Maigrauge convent. Cutterwil is today in the municipality of Belfaux (merger of 1977). In 1991 the village had 80 inhabitants.[1]

History of Cutterwil

1361. The name of the village is written « Curtivri ».[1]

Until 1798. Cutterwil belongs to the Old Lands of Fribourg until 1798.[1]

16th-17th centuries. Conflicts with Grolley, Misery and Belfaux over pastures and road upkeep are frequent.[1]

1722. A fine farmhouse is built. It will depend on the castle of Rosière, in Grolley, until the 20th century.[1]

1798-1848. Cutterwil belongs to the district and arrondissement of Fribourg.[1]

1848. The village passes to the Sarine district.[1]

1976. On 2 November a decree pronounces the merger of Cutterwil and Belfaux.[3]

1977. Cutterwil joins Belfaux. The enlarged municipality adopts arms with the « fine beech », which it keeps until the merger with Autafond.[1][2][3]

Historic sites in Cutterwil

Farmhouse of 1722. This fine farmhouse depended until the 20th century on the castle of Rosière, in the municipality of Grolley. It is now protected.[1]
