Glovelier
Origin of the name Glovelier
Name origin: first mentioned in 1139 as « Lolenviler ». Wikipedia also cites a form « Lovilir » from 1161 and explains the name by a Germanic personal name (Liubold, Liutbald or Liuthold) followed by the Romance « villare », estate or group of farms (to be cross-checked). The dialect name is « Yovlî » or « Glovlî », the old German name « Lietingen », and the inhabitants are nicknamed the « Tripets » (to be cross-checked). The hamlet of Sceut appears in 1210 as « ad rupem de Zuc ».
Founding of Glovelier
Neither the founder of Glovelier nor the circumstances of its creation are known. The area was frequented in the Late Bronze Age, as shown by a pottery collection found at Les Viviers, and then in Roman times: coins were discovered at Bonabé, on the line of a Roman road. The village, recorded in 1139, has been the seat of a parish since the 12th century. It was one of the thirteen free villages of the Delémont valley, a lordship of the Prince-Bishopric of Basel. It includes the hamlet of Sceut, which forms a separate burgher corporation, and is today in the municipality of Haute-Sorne (merger of 1 January 2013).
