Hauterive
Origin of the name Hauterive
The municipality bears the name of the Cistercian abbey of Hauterive, which lies in the former municipality of Posieux and long owned the land of today's municipality. Its official name is Hauterive (FR).[2][4]
Founding of Hauterive
Hauterive was born of the merger of Ecuvillens and Posieux, two villages long linked: as early as 1138 the parish of Ecuvillens included Posieux. The Grand Council decreed their union on 17 October 2000 and the new municipality has existed since 2001. It also includes the abbey of Hauterive and Grangeneuve. It covers 11.9 km² and belongs entirely to the parish of Ecuvillens.[1][2][3][5][6]
History of Hauterive
1138. Guillaume de Glâne, lord of Ecuvillens, founds the abbey of Hauterive. The same year the parish of Ecuvillens, which includes Posieux, is mentioned.[3][4]
1590. Posieux leaves the parish of Matran and from then on depends only on Ecuvillens.[2]
2000. On 17 October the Grand Council adopts the decree merging the municipalities of Ecuvillens and Posieux.[1]
2001. Ecuvillens and Posieux form the municipality of Hauterive, together with the abbey and Grangeneuve.[2][3]
