Posieux
Origin of the name Posieux
The village appears in 1155 in the form « Posuos ». Its name would go back to Celtic and then Gallo-Roman times and derive from the Latin puteus, the well.[1][2]
Founding of Posieux
Posieux occupies an important Celtic fortified site, linked to that of Châtillon-sur-Glâne. Its territory includes the Cistercian abbey of Hauterive, founded in 1138, which gradually extended its jurisdiction over the village, and Grangeneuve. Attached to the parish of Matran until 1590, Posieux then depended on that of Ecuvillens. Long agricultural, it became a residential locality after the motorway opened. Posieux is today in the municipality of Hauterive (merger of 2001).[1]
