Jongny
Origin of the name Jongny
Name origin: the village is mentioned between 1168 and 1180 in the form « Iaunie ». The -y ending of the present name is linked to an origin dating back to Roman times, but the precise etymology is not explained by the sources consulted (to be cross-checked).
Founding of Jongny
The sources consulted say neither when nor by whom the village was founded. Jongny appears at the end of the 12th century as a village of the large parish or community of Corsier, land of the bishop of Lausanne until 1536, and was a fief of the Blonay family. An early medieval cemetery, on the site of the later Saint-Laurent chapel, shows that the place was occupied well before its first written mention. A farming and wine-growing village, Jongny only became a fully autonomous commune when the parish of Corsier was divided in 1816.
