La Corbaz

Canton of Fribourg · District: Sarine · 281 inhabitants (2000, former municipality of La Corbaz, last figure before the merger)
Part of the municipality of La Sonnaz

Origin of the name La Corbaz

The village appears in 1294 as « La Corbassieri ». Some linguists link the name to a bend, a meander of the Sonnaz. Another hypothesis traces it to a Latin form « Curia Basilei ».[1][2]

Founding of La Corbaz

La Corbaz lies in the Sonnaz valley, where the lords of Englisberg held high and low justice after Fribourg was founded. The Praroman family and the Burghers' Hospital of Fribourg also owned property and rights here. The village always belonged to the parish of Belfaux. Long given over to livestock and mixed crops, it has become residential since the A12 motorway opened. La Corbaz is now part of the municipality of La Sonnaz (merger of 2004).[1][2]
