Les Friques

Canton of Fribourg · District: Broye · 51 inhabitants (1990, former municipality of Les Friques, last figure before the merger)
Part of the municipality of Saint-Aubin

Origin of the name Les Friques

In 1429 the village is called « Villard en Vully devers le vent ». The form « Villard des Friques » appears in 1584, and the name Les Friques, which later stood alone, remains unexplained.[1]

Founding of Les Friques

Les Friques forms a single settlement with Villars-le-Grand, in the canton of Vaud, yet the two municipalities have always remained separate. The Avenches to Portalban road serves as both municipal and cantonal boundary. The village was a fief of the lordship of Grandcour, then of that of Saint-Aubin from 1444, and has always belonged to the parish of Saint-Aubin. A rural place living from cereals and livestock, it is now part of the municipality of Saint-Aubin (merger of 1991).[1]
