Les Montets

Merger 2004 Canton of Fribourg · District: Broye · 1'587 inhabitants (31.12.2025)

Origin of the name Les Montets

The name "Les Montets" was proposed by the merger commission. The commission on local place names preferred "Aumont", the name of the most populous municipality, but the federal offices consulted raised no objection to "Les Montets", which the decree adopted.[1][2]

Founding of Les Montets

Les Montets was born on 1 January 2004 from the union of four neighbouring municipalities in the Petite Glâne valley: Aumont, Frasses, Granges-de-Vesin and Montet (Broye). The project had first been studied with Cugy and Vesin, and for a time with Seiry. The four municipal assemblies approved the agreement on 23 September 2003, and the Grand Council ratified the merger by a decree of 2 December 2003. The new municipality then had 1'061 inhabitants (legal population at 31.12.2001) on 10.35 km².[1][2][4]

History of Les Montets

2000. On 6 June Cugy, Frasses, Montet (Broye) and Vesin hold a first meeting after a poll of the population and set up a study commission. Granges-de-Vesin asks to join on 31 October.[1]

2002. Aumont joins the project in January, at first as an observer. Seiry comes in on 22 January and withdraws on 18 October. Meanwhile 90 citizens of Nuvilly have asked to join, but five of the seven municipalities prefer Nuvilly to wait until the current merger is complete.[1]

2003. Cugy withdraws on 17 March. On 24 June Vesin rejects the merger, while Aumont, Frasses, Granges-de-Vesin and Montet accept it. On 26 August Granges-de-Vesin confirms it will go on as one of four.[1]

2003. On 23 September the four assemblies approve the agreement: 118 yes to 2 no in Aumont, 29 to 5 in Frasses, 43 to 0 in Granges-de-Vesin and 49 to 0 in Montet.[1][2]

2003. The Council of State sends its message to the Grand Council on 21 October. The decree of 2 December gives the municipality the name Les Montets and grants it merger aid of 507'660 francs, paid from 2005.[1][2][3]

2004. Les Montets comes into being on 1 January. The names of the four former municipalities become village names, and their burghers become burghers of the new municipality.[2][4]
