Origin of the name Les Posses-sur-Bex

Name origin: not explained by the sources consulted. The current official name is Les Posses-sur-Bex.

Founding of Les Posses-sur-Bex

Les Posses is not a municipality: it is one of the eight hamlets of the municipality of Bex, lying on the road to Gryon, with views of the Dents-du-Midi and the Grand Muveran. The sources consulted say neither when nor by whom the hamlet was founded; its granaries dated 1666 and 1692 attest to settlement in the 17th century.

History of Les Posses-sur-Bex

1666. Construction of one of the hamlet's two typical granaries.

1692. Construction of a second granary at the entrance to the hamlet, one of the last Vaud granaries.

1714. Date on the well sheltered under the extended roof of the 1666 granary.

1740-1824. The botanist Abraham Thomas owns, among others, a garden at Les Posses, where he grows plants for his trade in seeds and plants.

19th century. At the beginning of the century, the steep main road to Gryon runs through Les Posses.

1898-1901. The Bex-Gryon-Villars-Chesières line opens; a railway tunnel of the line runs under Les Posses (date of the tunnel to be cross-checked).

Around 1961. Construction of the chapel, about 55 years old in 2016 (to be cross-checked).

2016. The hamlet has 166 inhabitants and has kept its original shooting society.

Historic sites in Les Posses-sur-Bex

Granaries of 1666 and 1692. Two typical granaries; the one of 1692, at the entrance to the hamlet, is described as one of the last Vaud granaries. The one of 1666 shelters under its extended roof, on the mountain side, a well dated 1714.

Chapel. A chapel about 55 years old in 2016, which still hosts many weddings.

Remains in Les Posses-sur-Bex

Stones of Seguin castle. To save money, the stones from the remains of Seguin castle, a forward fortified house on the Avançon d'Anzeindaz, were reused to build the Bex-Villars railway tunnel under Les Posses.
