Origin of the name Macconnens

The hamlet is mentioned in 1320 as « Masconens ».[1]

Founding of Macconnens

Macconnens lies north-east of Romont, on the left bank of the Glâne. A mill was already turning here in 1335. The place was a fief of the Billens family from the 14th century until about 1540, then changed hands several times until the lordship was sold to the State in 1840. A molasse quarry was worked on its territory. The village belonged to the parish of Torny-Pittet before joining that of Villarimboud. It has remained mainly agricultural, with livestock and dairy farming. Macconnens is now part of the municipality of Villaz (merger of 2020), after being joined to Villarimboud in 1973.[1]
