Villaz
Origin of the name Villaz
The municipality takes the name of Villaz-Saint-Pierre, a village recorded in 1177 as « Villa ». The name was submitted to the cantonal Nomenclature Commission and to swisstopo before the merger. The municipal logo shows three hills crossed by a single road, each topped by a church tower, with a V for the unity of the new municipality.[3][5][7]
Founding of Villaz
Since 1 January 2020 Villaz has united La Folliaz, formed in 2005 from Lussy and Villarimboud, and Villaz-Saint-Pierre, which had taken in Fuyens in 1978. The municipality has three villages, Lussy, Villarimboud and Villaz-Saint-Pierre. The union was first studied by six municipalities, then by four, before the two neighbours resumed the study on their own in 2018. The agreement was signed on 1 October 2018, the citizens accepted it on 25 November 2018 and the Grand Council adopted the decree on 25 June 2019. The two municipalities had 2'312 inhabitants in 2017, on 15.45 km².[1][2][3][4][5]
