Marly-le-Petit
Origin of the name Marly-le-Petit
Marly-le-Petit bears the name of Marly, written in 1055 in the Latin phrase « in marlensi », and is thus distinguished from Marly-le-Grand. Local tradition traces the name to the estate, the « fundus Martiliacus », of a Roman citizen named Martilius, whose villa stood at Les Râpettes.[1][2]
Founding of Marly-le-Petit
Until 1970 Marly-le-Petit was a municipality separate from its neighbour Marly-le-Grand. After the parish of Marly was reduced in 1630, it remained, with Marly-le-Grand, Pierrafortscha and Villarsel, one of its four localities, and the smallest. It received its own municipal statutes in 1764, more than a century and a half after those of Marly-le-Grand (1600). In the 20th century the opening of the Pérolles bridge brought the Winckler factory here. Marly-le-Petit is now part of the municipality of Marly (merger of 1970), whose coat of arms bears three alder leaves for Marly-le-Grand, Marly-le-Petit and Chésalles.[1][2][3]
