Origin of the name Miex

The name may derive from the Old French « mi », « which is at the half, in the middle of ». The same root would explain Mies, in the canton of Vaud.[2]

Founding of Miex

Miex is one of the two mountain hamlets of the municipality of Vouvry, together with Taney, above the village and the Rhône plain. The sunny terrace of Miex, at around 1'000 m, holds several clusters of houses. Above it, forests and alpine pastures spread through the valleys of Verne and Tanay. Its farmers took their cattle, with those of Vouvry, to the mayens of the Taney valley, where they made hay that was brought down to the village at the start of winter. When the hamlet first took shape is unknown.[1][4]

History of Miex

1281. Oldest known form of the name, « Miez ».[2]

1798. Vouvry forms a municipality with Miex and Taney.[1]

1917. The inhabitants gain a chapel, built that year.[3]

1976. On 18 September a few inhabitants found L'Echo du Banset, a village mutual aid society meant to fund the restoration of the chapel's exterior. Around a hundred people from the municipality join from the start.[3]

Le Banset. Locality made available by the municipality, which gave its name to the village society. Vouvry lent 10'000 francs interest-free to build a shelter there, still standing.[3]
