Origin of the name Naz

The village is first mentioned around 1200 under the name "Nars". A Franco-Provençal etymological hypothesis, deriving the name from "nasu" (nose, promontory), is put forward by a single source consulted and remains to be cross-checked.

Founding of Naz

Naz has no single identified founder. The village was the property of the cathedral chapter of Lausanne until 1536, before being attached to the neighbouring castellany of Dommartin, whose administration it then shared.

1536. The village is attached to the castellany of Dommartin.

1734. Mention of a tile works named "Brochon" according to the Dictionnaire historique de la Suisse (a communal source instead mentions three tile works at this time, an unresolved discrepancy, to be cross-checked).

1798-2006. Naz belongs to the district of Échallens.

1929. Addition of three tiles to the municipal coat of arms, in reference to the village's tile-making past (to be cross-checked, a single source).

2006. On 31 August, Naz moves from the district of Échallens to the new district of Gros-de-Vaud.

1 July 2011. Naz merges with Dommartin, Poliez-le-Grand and Sugnens to form the new municipality of Montilliez.
