Neirivue
Origin of the name Neirivue
The village is recorded in 1277 in the Latin form « Nigra aqua », and an earlier mention is also put forward for 955. It is later written « Neire ewe » in 1400 and « Noyrewe » in 1514. In German it was called « Schwarzwasser ». The name has received no etymological explanation.[1][2]
Founding of Neirivue
Neirivue lies on the left bank of the Sarine. In the Middle Ages the village belonged to the county of Gruyère, and a charter of 1278 shows Count Peter II holding various lands here in fief from Philip of Savoy. Attached for church matters first to Bulle and then to Gruyères, it formed its own parish in 1609. Livestock farming dominated, joined in the 19th century by straw plaiting, the timber industry and a sandstone quarry. Neirivue is today a village of the municipality of Haut-Intyamon (merger of 1 January 2002).[1][2]
