Ottanel
Origin of the name Ottanel
The name Ottanel, of unknown meaning, also occurs in the form « Autanelle ». That of Vernayaz gradually replaced it from the 13th century onwards.[1][4]
Founding of Ottanel
Ottanel lay on the territory of today's municipality of Vernayaz, whose name replaced its own. Its founding is undated. The settlement depended on the abbey of Saint-Maurice, which held rights there. It was the first seat of the parish of the Salvan and Finhaut valley, before that role passed to Salvan.[1][2]
