Origin of the name Puplinge

The name appears in 1573 as « Puplinge ». No explanation has yet been found for this name.[1]

Founding of Puplinge

Nobody knows who founded this street village, which also includes the hamlet of Cornière. Until 1851 its history merged with that of Presinge: having become French in 1792, Puplinge was attached together with Presinge to the newly created municipality of Ville-la-Grand. The two villages, ceded to the canton of Genève in 1816, then formed a single municipality, divided in two in 1851 following disagreements. Puplinge remained a rural municipality until the late 1960s, when the canton decided to allow HLM-type housing on its territory. The resulting population explosion required costly investments (school, sewers). After a popular petition in 1977, the municipality opted for less dense housing.[1][2]
