Origin of the name Sassel

Sassel first appears in written sources in 1177 in the form «Sases». The precise etymology of the name is not clearly established in the sources consulted (to be cross-checked).

Founding of Sassel

The village developed as a dependency of the abbey of Payerne, located on the medieval route linking Payerne to Orbe. From the 12th century, part of its territory was attached to the chapter of Lausanne, following a donation attributed to canon Emmo de Sassel (to be cross-checked). There is no single attested founding story: the village appears gradually in the sources as a rural community dependent on these ecclesiastical authorities, then, from 1536, on the bailiwick of Payerne.
