Origin of the name Chapelle (Broye)

The village is recorded in 1363 in the Latin form « Cappella ». Until 1953 the municipality bore the name Chapelle-près-Surpierre.[1]

Founding of Chapelle (Broye)

The municipality brought together the village of Chapelle and the hamlets of Coumin-Dessus and Coumin-Dessous, in the Surpierre enclave. In 1380 Chapelle and Coumin belonged to the lordship of Surpierre, whose fate they shared until the end of the Ancien Régime. The village has always belonged to the parish of Surpierre and has only a chapel, mentioned in the 17th century. People live from livestock, cereals and tobacco. Chapelle was part of the municipality of Cheiry from 2005 to 2020 and is now in the municipality of Surpierre (merger of 2021).[1][2]
