Torny
Origin of the name Torny
The municipality takes the name shared by two of its three villages, Torny-le-Grand and Torny-le-Petit, also called Torny-Pittet. Torny-le-Grand appears in 765/766 as « Taurniaco superiore », and the parish of Torny-le-Petit was called « Tourniaco » in the 8th century.[4][5][6]
Founding of Torny
Torny came into being on 1 January 2004 from the merger of Middes and Torny-le-Grand, under a decree of the Grand Council of 2 December 2003. Middes, which had taken in Torny-Pittet in 1848, brought that hamlet into the new municipality, which thus has three villages. The merger agreement was signed on 29 September 2003. Middes and Torny-le-Grand became village names, and their burghers became burghers of Torny. The State pays the municipality aid of 337'149 francs from 2005.[1][3][5]
