Vinzel

Canton of Vaud · District: Nyon · 385 inhabitants (31.12.2025)

Origin of the name Vinzel

The place is recorded in 1145 as «Vyncgel» or «Vynciel». The name may derive from a Latin form «vīnĭcellum», meaning a plot of vineyard (to be cross-checked).

Founding of Vinzel

None of the sources consulted says who founded the village or why. Although the territory is crossed by the Roman road of the Vy d'Etraz, no Roman or Burgundian remains have been found here. In the Middle Ages the territory was split into several fiefs. The village has always lived mainly from wine: in the 17th century only a few large landowners benefited from the spread of the vineyards, while the population remained poor, and phylloxera hit the crops and the inhabitants hard.
