Origin of the name Aïre

Aïre appears in 1317 as « Aeyria ». The origin of the name has not yet been explained.[1]

Founding of Aïre

The site of Aïre, on a promontory on the right bank of the Rhône, has been settled since the Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages the priory of Saint-Jean held most of the land there and collected the tithe. The village belonged to the parish of Saint-Gervais. In 1536 Aïre was attached to the Reformed parish of Vernier, itself dependent on that of Meyrin, and then shared the fate of Vernier, which became a Genevan municipality in 1816. Aïre is today a locality of the municipality of Vernier. The Aïre garden city lies within the territory of the City of Genève.[1]
