Origin of the name Autafond

Recorded in 1236 in the form « Auta-fonz », the name Autafond has found no certain explanation.[1]

Founding of Autafond

Since 1850 Autafond has consisted of three groups of houses: the hamlet of Autafond, Combes and Chenaleyres, mostly farms. The place has always belonged to the parish of Belfaux. In the Middle Ages the tithe went to the Church of Lausanne and the priory of Payerne exercised rights here through a resident mayor. Despite the nearness of Fribourg, Autafond has stayed rural, without the new districts of the neighbouring municipalities. It is today in the municipality of Belfaux (merger of 2016).[1][2]

1798. The municipality is incorporated into the district of Fribourg.[1]

1947. The Combes farm, destroyed by fire, is rebuilt.[2]

1980. On 25 November the first local land-use plan is approved.[2]

1990. About half of the working population still works in farming.[1]

1997. On 25 February the revised plan creates a rural settlement zone for the hamlet.[2]

2016. Autafond merges with Belfaux on 1 January. The new municipality takes over the hind with the rose from the arms of Autafond.[1][2][3]
