Autigny
Origin of the name Autigny
The name appears in 1068 in the form « Altignei ». German speakers once called it Ottenach. The name remains unexplained.[1]
Founding of Autigny
Autigny grew up beside the Glâne and the Neirigue, on land where remains of Bronze Age and Roman fortifications survive. In the 12th century a family of Autigny held a lordship here. The charterhouse of La Part-Dieu later collected ground rents and transfer dues here and exercised jurisdiction. The village is the seat of a parish recorded from 1228, which included Chénens and Cottens. In the 19th century it had a tile works, an oil mill and a sawmill. Fodder crops and cattle breeding still dominate, and in 1990 the primary sector still employed 35 % of the working population.[1]
