Origin of the name Estavayer-le-Gibloux

The village is written « Estavaiet » in 1157/62, then « Staviolum sous Jublor » in 1227. In German it was formerly called « Stäffis am Gibel ». The meaning of the name is not explained.[1]

Founding of Estavayer-le-Gibloux

The village, away from the main roads, first belonged to the lordship of Pont. It is the seat of a parish already served by a priest around 1160, on which Rueyres-Saint-Laurent, Villarsel and Villarlod depended. The tithe was shared between the lords of Billens, the counts of Gruyère, the Hospital of Notre-Dame and the Great Confraternity of Fribourg. Estavayer-le-Gibloux has kept its rural character, with livestock and fodder farming. The village is now part of the municipality of Gibloux (merger of 2016), having formed the municipality of Le Glèbe with three neighbours from 2003.[1][2]
