Rueyres-Saint-Laurent
Origin of the name Rueyres-Saint-Laurent
In 1175 the village appears in the mention « apud Rivoriam ». In German it was formerly called « Rueyres-St. Lorenz ». The meaning of Rueyres is not explained.[1]
Founding of Rueyres-Saint-Laurent
The village grew up on the western slope of the Gibloux. In the Middle Ages it formed a lordship, where the abbey of Hauterive, the lords of Pont, the d'Englisberg, the Bennwil and the burghers' hospital of Fribourg acquired property in the 13th and 14th centuries. It belongs to the parish of Estavayer-le-Gibloux, while having its own chapel. Rueyres-Saint-Laurent has kept a rural character, with livestock and cereals. The village is now part of the municipality of Gibloux (merger of 2016), having belonged to the municipality of Le Glèbe from 2003.[1][2]
