Aven
Origin of the name Aven
The name of Aven, a village on the Conthey hillside, has no known explanation.
Founding of Aven
Aven is a village in the municipality of Conthey, on the slope above the Rhône plain, at 934 m, between Erde and Derborence. In the Middle Ages, it formed with Daillon, Erde and Premploz the four villages of the « mont », in the Savoyard castellany of Conthey. It is not known since when the village has existed.[1][2][4]
History of Aven
13th century. The majorie of Daillon appears, an office held in fief from the vidomne, covering the four villages of the mont, including Aven.[2]
1352. The franchises granted to the borough of Conthey allow the men and women of Aven, like those of Premploz, Erde and Vétroz, to sell the fruit of their vines and the grain of their fields inside the borough walls every Tuesday.[3]
1446. The men of the majorie buy back the office.[2]
1700. The chapel of La Barmaz is built west of the village, on the road to Derborence. It is dedicated to the Virgin and to Saints Bernard and Anthony.[5]
after 1737. The chapel of La Barmaz bears only the name of Saint Bernard.[5]
1861-1863. The chapel of Saint-Antoine is built and blessed in 1863 under the patronage of Saint Nicholas of Flüe, later replaced by Saint Anthony the Hermit. Its altar also dates from 1863.[5]
around 1954. The road to Derborence is built at Aven.[6]
