Origin of the name Erde

Erde, a village on the Conthey hillside, bears a name that remains unexplained.

Founding of Erde

Erde is a village in the municipality of Conthey, on the hillside at 794 m, where the roads to the Sanetsch and to Derborence meet. In the Middle Ages, it was one of the four villages of the « mont », with Daillon, Aven and Premploz, in the Savoyard castellany of Conthey. It is not known when the village took shape. Until 1927 Erde, Premploz, Daillon and Aven had only one chapel and belonged to the parish of Saint-Séverin. In the 20th century, Erde became the parish centre of these upper villages.[1][2][4][5]

History of Erde

13th century. The majorie of Daillon appears, an office held in fief from the vidomne, covering the four villages of the mont, including Erde.[2]

1352. The franchises granted by Count Amadeus VI of Savoy to the borough of Conthey allow the men and women of Erde, like those of Premploz, Aven and Vétroz, to sell the fruit of their vines and the grain of their fields inside the borough walls every Tuesday.[3]

Before 1390. A family d'Erde owns the chapel of Sainte-Pétronille in the borough of Conthey, after the de la Tour. Around 1390 the chapel passes to the de Cervent.[9]

1446. The men of the majorie buy back the office.[2]

1927. Architect Praz and parish priest Lathion build the church of the Holy Family for the villages of Erde, Premploz, Daillon and Aven. It is consecrated on Easter Monday, 18 April 1927.[5]

1929. The parish of Erde is created for the upper villages, separated from Saint-Séverin (1928 according to another source, which dates the separation to 11 October 1928, by Bishop Victor Bieler).[1][5]

2022. The last stage of the works protecting the village against floods is completed, with the rebuilding of the torrent des Fontaines. The works show that the village stands on solid rock.[6]
