Bénex

Canton of Vaud · District: Nyon · Bénex has never been the subject of a separate census: integrated into Prangins as early as 1557, well before the first modern demographic surveys, its own population history is not known. Only the overall population of the municipality of Prangins (which includes Bénex) is documented from the 18th century onward.
Part of the municipality of Prangins

Origin of the name Bénex

The name Bénex is said to come from the Latin «benedictus» (blessed), the same root as the first name and surname Benoît. The attested old forms of the place name are «Beinai» in 1262, then «Benay» in 1315. This etymology was found in only one source consulted and would deserve to be cross-checked with another toponymic reference before being considered definitively established.

Founding of Bénex

There is no founding story attributable to a specific individual or authority for Bénex. Archaeological remains attest to Roman occupation on the site, with the remains of a mausoleum overlooking a villa, found at Bénex as well as at the neighbouring place of Sadex. Bénex therefore probably developed as a rural hamlet close to this ancient estate. In the Middle Ages, the hamlet held an important estate belonging to the Templar commandery of La Chaux (today in the municipality of La Chaux, near Cossonay), which exercised land rights there. No lord or religious order is known to have founded Bénex as such: the place instead formed gradually as an agricultural dependency, before being administratively attached to the seigneury and then to the municipality of Prangins.
