Origin of the name Chailly-Montreux

Name origin: not explained by the sources consulted. The locality today bears the official name Chailly-Montreux; it is also found in the form « Chailly-sur-Clarens ».

Founding of Chailly-Montreux

Chailly is not a municipality: it is a village of the municipality of Montreux, in the district of Riviera-Pays-d'Enhaut, and one of the 24 villages that make it up. No founding act is known. A fortified house is mentioned there in the 13th century, and Chailly appears as a metralie in the first regulation of Le Châtelard, in 1496. Chailly was one of the 17 villages of the former municipality of Le Châtelard; it formed a municipal fraction, dissolved on 9 December 1939. Le Châtelard merged with Les Planches in 1962 to form the municipality of Montreux.

History of Chailly-Montreux

13th century. A fortified house is mentioned at Chailly.

1496. Chailly is mentioned as a metralie in the first regulation of Le Châtelard.

around 1650. Date of the oldest documents preserved in the village archives.

1805. First written mention of a pinte (tavern) in the village.

1851. The village begins collecting taxes as a municipal fraction.

1890. The municipal authority of Le Châtelard asks whether the village wishes to be connected to the telephone.

1893. Three people are appointed to look after the village's electric lamps.

1896. Road widening: the corners of several buildings are cut back; their rounded façades are still visible.

1911. Opening of the Clarens-Chailly-Blonay railway.

1912. Construction of a new school building.

1939. On 9 December, the municipal fraction of Chailly is dissolved, after repaying the loan linked to the tram.

1962. The municipality of Le Châtelard, to which Chailly belonged, merges with Les Planches to form the municipality of Montreux.

1970s. Opening of the motorway, with an exit serving the village.

Historic sites in Chailly-Montreux

Village street. A walk through the village lets you read part of its history on the façades: iron hooks for tethering horses and building corners rounded off when the road was widened in 1896.

Fountains. The village has several fountains.

Chailly school. The village built a new school building in 1912.

Remains in Chailly-Montreux

Iron hooks on the façades. These hooks bear witness to a former stopping place: travellers tethered their horses there to go and drink, eat and sometimes sleep in the village's lodgings, taverns and cabarets.

Rounded corners of 1896. The rounded curves of some façades result from the decision, in 1896, to cut back the corners of buildings in order to widen the road.
