Chambésy
Origin of the name Chambésy
The village appears in 1277 as « Sambesie », the year a Hugues de Chambésy is named. The cadastres of 1806-1807 write « Chambesy » and « Chambesi », the Mayer atlas of 1830 « Chambésy ». Where does the name come from? That is still unknown.[1][2]
Founding of Chambésy
The origin of the village is unknown. Very fragmentary remains of Roman buildings have been recorded at Chambésy-Dessus. Chambésy consists of two hamlets: Chambésy-Dessus, which contains the historic core with 17th- and 18th-century buildings, and Chambésy-Dessous, a more modest hamlet with a traditional layout. In 1816 the territory of Pregny and Chambésy became a Genevan municipality, today the municipality of Pregny-Chambésy.[1][2][3]
