Château Rothschild
Origin of the name Château Rothschild
The château bears the name of the de Rothschild family, for whom it was built from 1858.[1][3]
Founding of Château Rothschild
The Château Rothschild stands in the municipality of Pregny-Chambésy. Baron Adolphe de Rothschild, who had acquired the estate three years earlier, had the house built by Luigi Bagutti in 1822-1825 demolished and between 1858 and 1860 (or in 1858-1859) built a monumental Louis XVI-style château, to plans attributed to George Henry Stokes and perhaps Joseph Paxton. Completed in 1872 with an attic storey, the estate then received stables, a riding hall and greenhouses, and its park was laid out in 1887-1892 to the taste of Baroness Julie de Rothschild.[1][2][3][4]
