Château de Penthes
Origin of the name Château de Penthes
The place was called « Penthaz » (now Penthes). Where does the name come from? That is still unknown.[2]
Founding of Château de Penthes
The Château de Penthes stands on the Pregny slope, in the municipality of Pregny-Chambésy. A fortified house existed here in the 14th century. In the 16th and 17th centuries the fortified building of Penthaz, like that of Pregny-la-Tour, recalled Pregny's border position. In the 1750s and 1760s the estate received a classical mansion, which replaced the fortified house. The estate belongs to the canton of Genève. From 1972 the château housed the Museum of the Swiss Abroad, and in 1984 an outbuilding was dedicated to General Dufour. The museum, run by a private foundation, closed in 2021 after the foundation went bankrupt.[1][2][3][5]
