Origin of the name Dizy

The village appears in 961 as «in villa Discidis» (the municipality gives the year 964 for the same charter of the monastery of Romainmôtier; date to be cross-checked), then in 1041 as «Dysi». The etymology is not explained in the sources consulted.

Founding of Dizy

The sources consulted do not say by whom or why the village was founded. The municipality mentions Roman remains and the place name «La Batiaz» (to be cross-checked). Dizy is attested in the 10th century in a charter of the monastery of Romainmôtier, which owned land there in 1041. In the Middle Ages the lords of Dizy, descendants of the knight Guillaume (12th century), exercised low and middle justice there, while high justice belonged to the lords of Cossonay. The village's past remains little known, as its archives disappeared during the Bourla-Papey campaign.

Historic sites in Dizy

Church. Building erected in the mid-19th century to house the church, the school and the dairy; only the church has kept its original function. Dizy has always belonged to the parish of Cossonay.

Former wine press and former bakehouse. The wine press gave way to a communal freezer and the fire brigade premises; the bakehouse became the village hall.
