Origin of the name Eschert

The village appears in 1179 as «Escert», a name that has remained unexplained.[1]

Founding of Eschert

Eschert is a star-shaped village on the southern slope of the Grand Val, or Cornet, together with the Sous la Rive quarter along the Raus, which borders Moutier. It formed a courtine (rural district) of the chapter of Moutier-Grandval and always belonged to the parish of Grandval. It had 114 inhabitants in 1629. Away from the road and railway of the Grand Val, it stayed rural, with family firms in mechanics and building, and is now home to people working in industry. Sewage treatment and the primary school are shared with neighbouring villages.[1]
