Esmonts

Canton of Fribourg · District: Glâne · 157 inhabitants (2000, former municipality of Esmonts, last figure before the merger)
Part of the municipality of Ursy

Origin of the name Esmonts

The place is called « villa de Mont » in 996, later « dîme de Mont », « bailliage des Monts » and « Les Monts ». The form « ès Monts », which gave the present name, is recorded in 1832.[1][2]

Founding of Esmonts

Esmonts appears in 996 in a charter of King Rudolph III of Burgundy, who granted the knight Balfred and his wife Willerma, as a precarium, property of the abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune at Mont that the couple had earlier given to the abbey. The village then probably belonged to the lords of Prez and came under the Vaud castellany of Moudon. It lives from crops (barley, wheat, beet), livestock and dairying. Esmonts is now part of the municipality of Ursy (merger of 2012), having joined Vuarmarens in 2006.[1][2]
