Goppisberg
Origin of the name Goppisberg
Forms « Goblisperg » in 1200 and « Goplinsberg » in 1331. The etymology is unexplained.[1]
Founding of Goppisberg
Goppisberg stretches along the road axis between Greich and Betten on the northern slope of the Rhône valley, at 1334 m. Two graves, one from the Bronze Age and one from the Roman period, show early occupation. Mentioned in 1343 as a « communitas », the village formed with Betten a quarter of Mörel-Grengiols before 1798. It has always belonged to the parish of Mörel. The chapel of St John the Baptist was built in 1669 and the village has been a rectorate since 1845. The rise of tourism from the mid-20th century drew inhabitants up to the alp, and a motor road opened up the village in 1981. Goppisberg is today in the municipality of Riederalp (merger of 1 November 2003 with Greich and Ried-Mörel).[1][2][3][4]
