Greich
Origin of the name Greich
The village is mentioned in 1279 as « de greneche ». Where does the name come from? That is still unknown.[1]
Founding of Greich
Greich is a street village on the northern slope of the Rhône valley at 1350 m, above Mörel. Mentioned in 1279, it appears in 1373 as a commune (« communitas »). Before 1798 it formed with Mörel a quarter of the community of Mörel-Grengiols. It has always belonged to the parish of Mörel. Boundary disputes with Ried, begun in the 15th century, were finally settled in 1677. The communal statutes date from 1525 and the burgher register from 1782. The chapel of St Agatha was built in 1511 and thoroughly remodelled in 1616. From the 18th century until 1981 (or 1960) no new houses were built. The Mörel-Greich-Greicheralp cable car (1950) and the growth of tourism from the mid-20th century led inhabitants to move up to the Greicheralp. Greich is today in the municipality of Riederalp (merger of 1 November 2003 with Goppisberg and Ried-Mörel).[1][2][3][4]
